Ponta do Ouro is a laid-back beach town at the southernmost tip of Mozambique, where warm western Indian Ocean waters meet a protected marine reserve. With 22+ dive sites along 45 km of coastline, divers swim with whale sharks, manta rays, and humpback whales on pristine reefs that most of the world hasn't discovered yet. Year-round diving with 15-30m visibility.

Bottlenose dolphins occur year-round off Ponta do Ouro and are often encountered from boats between dive sites.Whale sharks are seasonally sighted off Ponta do Ouro, especially during the warmer, plankton-rich months from November through March. The Pinnacle serves as a year-round cleaning station for manta rays — the same individuals return to the same spot to be cleaned by wrasse. The area is a critical breeding ground for humpback whales, with mothers and calves spending weeks in the warm, protected waters from July to October.Ponta do Ouro means 'Point of Gold' in Portuguese — named for the golden colors of the coastal sand dunes at sunset. The town sits just 15 km from the South African border, making it the most accessible international dive destination for Johannesburg and Durban divers.Ponta do Ouro-Kosi Bay is one of the world's first transfrontier marine conservation areas, linking Mozambique and South Africa in an 1800 km2 protected corridor.Almost all dives at Ponta are beach-entry launches — divers wade through the waves from the beach to reach reef sites. The Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve was established in 2009, protecting about 1040 km2 of reef.Loggerhead turtles nest on Ponta's beaches from November to March, with conservation projects monitoring and protecting nests.
