Bonaire, a special municipality of the Netherlands, is renowned as the world's shore diving capital. Part of the ABC islands in the Caribbean, it boasts pristine fringing reefs, a vibrant marine park, and consistent year-round diving conditions. Divers can explore a vast network of easily accessible shore dive sites and enjoy an abundance of marine life including turtles, eagle rays, and diverse coral formations. The island is dedicated to marine conservation, offering a unique and sustainable diving experience.

Bonaire National Marine Park, established in 1979, protects all the island's surrounding waters from the high-water mark down to 60m (200ft) — one of the world's oldest marine reserves.Bonaire is known as the shore-diving capital of the world, with more than 60 dive sites marked by yellow-painted stones along the coastal road. The island's nickname, 'Diver's Paradise', appears right on its license plates.Every diver pays an annual nature fee to STINAPA, the foundation that funds and manages the marine park.Bonaire is the 'B' of the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao) and lies outside the Caribbean hurricane belt, giving it calm diving year-round.Klein Bonaire, the uninhabited islet off the west coast, is a protected sea-turtle nesting site ringed by pristine reef.Salt Pier, beneath the island's salt-loading pier, is one of Bonaire's most iconic dives, famous for schooling fish and macro life among its pillars.Spearfishing has been banned in Bonaire since 1971, and boats use fixed moorings instead of anchors to protect the coral.

Bull Shark

Bull Shark

General species description, not specific to this destination

Bull sharks are one of the most impressive predators divers can encounter in warm coastal waters. These robust sharks are easily recognized by their broad, blunt snout, stocky build, and grey coloration with a white underside. Growing up to 11 feet long, they have a powerful, muscular appearance that commands respect underwater. Bull sharks are known for their curious nature and may approach divers, maintaining a confident but generally non-aggressive demeanor. They're often seen cruising along reef walls or in open water, sometimes in small groups. Their ability to tolerate both saltwater and freshwater makes them unique among sharks, and they're excellent hunters with a varied diet including fish, rays, and other marine life.

Great Hammerhead

General species description, not specific to this destination

The Great Hammerhead is the largest of all hammerhead species, instantly recognizable by its massive, flattened head extension called a cephalofoil. This prehistoric-looking predator can reach lengths of up to 20 feet, with a distinctive tall, sickle-shaped dorsal fin. Their unique head shape houses electroreceptors that help them hunt stingrays buried in sand. Great Hammerheads are solitary hunters, often seen cruising along reef walls and sandy bottoms. Despite their intimidating size, they're generally shy around divers and will often move away when approached. Their powerful swimming style and graceful movements make encounters truly memorable for fortunate divers.

Southern Stingray

Southern Stingray

General species description, not specific to this destination

The Southern Stingray is one of the Caribbean's most iconic marine encounters, featuring a distinctive diamond-shaped body that can span up to 5 feet across. These graceful cartilaginous fish glide effortlessly over sandy bottoms and seagrass beds with their whip-like tail trailing behind. Their dorsal surface displays a beautiful olive-brown to gray coloration that provides perfect camouflage against the seafloor, while their ventral side is pure white. Divers often spot them partially buried in sand with only their eyes and spiracles visible, or see them gracefully swimming in the water column. Their peaceful demeanor and curiosity toward divers makes them excellent subjects for underwater photography, though their venomous barb demands respectful observation distance.
